HOW TO BE AT YOUR BEST IN ONLINE MEETINGS
Online meetings now play a central role in business communications. Zoom and other online meeting platforms continue to be used regularly in a wide range of businesses. People have come to realize that many face-to-face meetings aren’t really necessary, as technology now makes it possible to do things virtually that used to require your physical presence. All this means it’s critical to be at your best online—and here’s what the experts suggest.
Body language is important. Body language is a form of visual communication, and online video is obviously a visual, as well as audible, medium. So, even though less of your body comes into play online, body language still counts for a lot when it comes to how others view you—your credibility, trustworthiness, honesty, professionalism, and other personal traits. So, even though you’re limited to a small screen image, your online body language can really contribute a lot to how you come across in a meeting. Here are the three parts of your body that can help you get your points across.
Your face. Online, this is your best body language tool, because it’s what others mostly see. Since your face takes up a good part of the screen, your facial expressions play a big role in how others judge what you’re saying. Facial expressions reveal emotions, even those you want to hide. So, if you don’t want to show how you feel, you’ll have to develop the ability to put on a “poker face.” But you can also use facial expressions to elicit the emotional responses you want from others. Smile, and people are happy. Look concerned, and people get serious. Practice these looks in front of a mirror.
Your hands and arms. Here, gestures come into play. Yes, it’s a small window you’re working in online, but you can still use the top half of your body to strengthen or clarify points you’re making. Stay 18” to 24” away from the screen, so others can see what your hands, arms, and shoulders are doing. But try to keep your moves within an imaginary square around your torso, so your visual energy stays focused.
Your whole upper body. In a virtual meeting, don’t sit there like a statue. Feel free to move your upper body naturally. Sit far enough back from the screen for others to see you change your position now and again. Maintain good posture—don’t slouch—but lean back and lean in when participating in the discussion. This makes you both more engaging and more memorable. You look like you are part of the conversation—and that’s a great way to look online!

We closed on our new

We closed on our new home a couple of weeks ago and the process couldn’t have been easier. I think selecting a new washer and dryer was more confusing! The paperwork was minimal and Jim and his staff moved quickly through every step. Jim was easy to reach and always available to answer questions. I would highly recommend Jim to anyone hoping to secure a mortgage, but especially to first time home buyers. He made the process smooth and uncomplicated.
