6 SKILLS TO REGAIN MOMENTUM AND GROW REVENUE
No matter what’s happening in the marketplace, there are always opportunities to grow. But to take advantage of those opportunities, you have to develop new skills. The good news is, skills can be readily learned, then developed through practice.
Skill 1:
Identifying shifts in the market before others do. Subtle shifts in the market constantly occur. Identifying these shifts earlier can give you a huge advantage. Remember that business tends to be cyclical, contracting and expanding in the course of the year. To know when changes are happening, track what’s going on in your business: leads, prospects in the pipeline, new customers, revenues. Compare numbers for the current month versus the prior month and the same month in the prior year. This shows you the direction the market is moving. People who can identify and act on market changes early can increase their market share.
Skill 2:
Change up your communications. Once you’ve identified how the market is shifting, you need to understand how those changes affect what you’re communicating to your prospects and clients. What kinds of content will be most valuable to them? Ask yourself if you’re presenting this new information in an understandable way. Look at how businesses like yours in other markets are communicating, and note things that you like. Speak in your own voice, but don’t be afraid to use someone else’s method as a model. People who communicate clearly should see more business come their way.
Skill 3:
Telling a compelling story. Being a good storyteller always gives you an advantage, especially in a changing market. Tell stories about how you helped clients get over their biggest obstacles; or about how you tackled a big challenge; or about how market trends are affecting your target audience. Both in person and in social media, blog posts, and videos, storytelling can be a powerful tool for success.
Skill 4:
Building rapport quickly. The key to doing this is to focus on some key actions with people you meet: smile; always make direct eye contact; ask questions; complement the other person; mirror their physical behaviors; and follow up immediately. Establishing rapport quickly starts building the deep relationships that deliver long-term success.
Skill 5:
Creating marketing that builds business momentum. The best marketing efforts are the ones that build momentum for your business. Go online and find out how businesses like yours across the country are marketing themselves on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and their websites. Consider ways you can use these techniques to enlarge your audience. When marketing creates business momentum, growth soon follows.
Skill 6:
Developing an incomparable work ethic. Hard work is more valuable than ever in a changing environment—when you can seize market share while others coast, hoping current difficulties will pass quickly. The hardest working people are always the top producing ones, especially now!
